¹⁶ When the scribes^(A) of the Pharisees^[a](B) saw that He was eating^(C) with sinners^(D) and tax collectors,^(E) they asked His disciples, “Why does He eat^[b] with tax collectors and sinners?”

¹⁷ When Jesus heard this, He told them, “Those who are well don’t need^(F) a doctor,^(G) but the sick^(H) do need one. I didn’t come to call the righteous,^(I) but sinners.”^(J)

A Question about Fasting

¹⁸ Now^(K) John’s^(L) disciples^(M) and the Pharisees^[c](N) were fasting.^(O) People came and asked Him, “Why do John’s disciples and the Pharisees’ disciples fast, but Your disciples do not fast?”
